About NORCAL-HUG

NORCAL-HUG is short for Northern California Haiku User Group. We are a group of supporters of the Haiku open source operating system with a mission to build and grow a Haiku user community in Northern California.

History of NORCAL-HUG

As the Haiku conference WalterCon 2007 scheduled to be held in San Francisco was canceled, a few of us who live in and around the San Francisco Bay Area organized an impromptu Haiku community gathering which took place at the Linux Picnic 2007 (Picn*x). During this event, we talked about presenting Haiku at user group meetings in the area; in the following weeks we continued these discussions, and we eventually decided to create the Northern California Haiku User Group, or NORCAL-HUG for short.

Objectives

Our mission is simple: we want to build and grow a Haiku community in Northern California. To that end, we will plan to carry out activities to raise awareness and educate the public about Haiku and the project.

Planned activities

Here is a list of some of the activities that we have in mind.

  • HUG meetings (initially every 3 months)
  • Online community building (through this website and the NORCAL-HUG mailing list)
  • Represent Haiku at local conferences, user group meetings and other events
  • Organize install fests and/or Haiku workshops
  • Network with other local/regional computer user groups
  • Build relationships with local/regional high schools and universities
