Beginning to program on BeOS/Haiku - Part 2
I now have the BeOS developer's tools installed on my BeOS partition. Next step was to load up some of the Be sample projects and attempt to compile them. That worked fine for all of the ones with .proj files. I didn't mess with the ones that only had make files just yet. I then tried typing in the code from the book to produce the Hello World program which the author based on the Be version. Well this is where I ran into some trouble, see the author used the 1995 Be Hello World sample code and the one I installed was the 1999 version. Seems to be some things different , so I'll have to spend some more time on it to see what's different and understand why. So for now I haven't messed with any more code from the book.
I have continued reading and am now into chapter 6. I'll probably take a break after I finish chapter 6 and try to get some working code just so I understand everything I've read up to that point. It's one thing to read it and another to make sure I understand it. Anyone else got the book and following along yet?

Not much progress to report this week. I finished up chapter 6 and I am now nearly done with Chapter 7. This next week or two I will be focusing on finishing up on Chapter 7 and starting Chapter 8.
I have been busy again testing Haiku on a couple of my laptops and posting new or updating old bug reports. There's been some big fixes the past few days, including one that now allows GoBe Productive to work. Nice work Haiku team! There's still quite a few bugs to squash before we'll see R1/Alpha. They have updated the milestone list to show which bugs they consider important to have fixed for an R1/Alpha. As I write this they are at 31% with 37 R1/Alpha bugs to fix, this number will vary day to day as new bugs are reported and old ones are fixed, but the trend is in he right direction.
